Hands on! Penrith… An invitation to “people who are good at making things” with fabric, recycled materials and stuff!

UPDATE: Registrations for this workshop have now closed.

It’s now the last four weeks counting down to the exciting presentation of the No Boundaries project in Penrith, and we have decided to run a final hands on workshop / working bee / making project to “make, compile and complete” special tactile textile art pieces that are designed for people with sight impairment to enjoy.

We are inviting people from Penrith, Western Sydney and region to participate in this free workshop to help make the work, learn about tactile art, and make large collaboratively created tactile art pieces for public exhibition at No Boundaries and beyond.

The workshop will be initiated by Cindi Drennan (Creative director of the No Boundaries project) who has an unusual set of skills combining projection art, lighting design, and textile art. Penrith artist Susan Oxenham will be involved to provide guidance and inspiration to those of us involved in making the work. The workshop builds on a previous workshop led by artist David Capra.

Tactile Art made from recycled materials... looks AND feels good. The workshop is ideal for people who LOVE textiles, working with your hands, craftwork, sewing, fabric arts, quilting, hands on glueing and painting, messy stuff, working with sewing machines… and who would be interested in participating in a working bee on a large collaborative project using a variety of media.

The project will interweave lights, recycled materials, textiles and other “stuff” together into artworks designed to be enjoyed and interpreted by people with low vision. If you are interested in seeing some other artwork made along similar principles… check the links at the bottom of this post.

For these artwork pieces, the use of materials that are able to be felt, and to be able to tell a story through touch as well as through the image represented, is very important.

For this reason, the workshop is also a great opportunity for people who are interested in supporting friends, family and community members who may have a vision impairment, to share their knowledge and to be part of the project team.

The artworks will be presented at the No Boundaries event on the 21st and 22nd September 2012, and then will be exhibited in other communities with the support of project partner Vision Australia.

The hands on workshop will be held in Penrith on the 28th – 30th of August, with a follow up session on the 1st and 2nd September. You don’t have to be able to attend every session but naturally it will be “heaps fun” so the more days the merrier. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND UNABLE TO ATTEND THESE DATES we would like you to let us know, as there is the possibility of extending or re-arranging dates depending on numbers.
