Dan Kojta seeks Memories or Media: share your old photos or film of your experience with the Nepean River

Through the ‘No Boundaries Project’ we are seeking footage or prints from those who may have experienced the Mud Baths or the Weir of the Nepean River around 1940’s to 1970’s. Specifically film footage, prints, or memories from anyone with experience of the Mud Baths near the weir. Also the Nepean’s giant rope swings under the Victoria bridge or those who climbed the bridge, or used the weir for swimming and family Bbq’s…fishing, swimming, collecting, rowing… to contribute to this project which looks at the way our collective childhoods have evolved through time with the experience of adventure through our mediated, moderated, modern lives…

A Polish Affair by the River Nepean

Do you have photos of the Nepean River and Penrith Mud Baths? Though they may be gone…. so many people have wonderful memories of them! Do you have photos or memorabilia of these experiences to show us? Find out more here.

And to get you thinking about what is in your photo collection, here is a treasure from the Kojta family album:

A beautiful image of a great sunday celebration in the style of the Great Gatsby. I hold such fond memories of running around amongst the Europeans with their philosophical arguments, the endless eating of small goods, all home made; home made salami, prochuetto, sledge’, black bread hot from the oven… and Vodka made by the loving hand of my grand father, Djadek. The river provided cooling waters that smelled like summer, an abundance of fish straight from the bank to the table, and the perfect geographical ensemble of shading she oaks and granite punctuating the landscape, on cloud like green grass. I remember families of all nationalities uniting through the sharing of food. The river was the conduit to all.

I think this image will inspire memories from others of their experience on the weekend river expeditions.

Web Accessibility and Self publishing… using WordPress on the No Boundaries web site.

illustration of a figure reading WWW braille with a wordpress logo for a head, depicting writing with wordpress for accessible reading on the internet. If you are a regular visitor to this No Boundaries site you’ve probably noticed some changes… not just to the content, but to the style, layout, form and structure. This has been because we have been working through the steps to make this site as accessible as possible. As at 30th June 2012 we think we’re 95% of the way towards best practise.

We think some of you might be interested in the story behind this and the decisions we’ve made, especially if you are using wordpress to blog and would like to present your information to people with sight impairment.

Interactive... media art generated by drummingLate last week we received news about our Penrith project partnership “No Boundaries” which is exciting and adds another keen element to our interactive media art development.

An extension to the No Boundaries project, called Light Rhythm Plays, is being supported by funding from the NSW Government through Arts NSW and Ageing, Disability and Home Care.

Light Rhythm Plays will build on illuminart’s interactive media arts, to develop new interfaces and applications of audiovisual media in collaboration between audiovisual artists and DIY innovators with Nordoff-Robbins, a music therapy organisation based in Western Sydney.

Experimentation

The very first hands on session of our newly formed Arts group happened this week (on Monday the 28th May) at PCYC Penrith. Six Penrith people came to the class and were immediately in the zone, experimenting with a range of materials from pastel to craypas, watercolour pencil and watercolour.

The aim of the first session was to try materials and see what gives pleasure and delight, and discover how to play with them and have fun and relaxation. Everyone tried more than one material and technique.

The main things learned today were how different materials feel, look, work and most importantly, that even when the end result does not satisfy you, there is still another creative use for it.

Among the most fascinating experiments today were a brightly coloured abstract arrangement by Kevin that could make you feel like you were at a Christmas banquet (it sparkled with vibrant colour that felt celebratory) and two pictures of landscapes with trees by Paul, that showed what Penrith used to look like a few decades ago. We loved to hear Paul talk about going camping in those trees. Valda, Jill, Anne and Tim all created interesting experiments too, which we found our own stories and ideas in by looking at them.

Below are a few photos of us in our journey to explore the materials on the first day. We will soon be posting a very special video of the work we made, for you to enjoy and share.

Our next session will be on the afternoon of Monday the 4th of June 2012, from 1pm to 4pm at PCYC, 100 Station St Penrith.

The first meeting of the Art Group project…

Today the Art Group that will begin running in Penrith on the 28th of May, met for the first time to talk about what the activities would involve, who would attend, the materials to be used and some of the topics of interest.

Cindi and Robyn were joined by five interested people with apologies from a couple of others. The group talked about how the art pieces made, would become part of the projection show in September.

Some of the areas that are exciting to the participants, are to work with an art teacher to show some new techniques and materials. The idea of being able to take an excursion to the River to paint and draw “plein aire” (in the outdoors) is also of great interest. Some logistics to be considered in the outing are the duration, accessibility of the site, transport and permissions from guardians. But overall it seemed like an event to make part of the process.

Topics discussed included the historical changes in Penrith and the way the area has changed, grown and improved.
