Video of the Tactile Workshops: Storytelling through textures!

Braided fish in a bubble wrap sea... David Capra, one of the artists of the No Boundaries project team, worked with individuals and groups in the Penrith area to create some tactile and textural story panels. The artwork created is being completed now, for presentation as part of the daytime installations at the No Boundaries site. You can find them in a series of installations around the columns of the colonnade at the spectacular free public event on the 21st and 22nd September.

Many images created in thee workshops were photographed, and are currently being worked on as digital media… so you will see some of these very images come to life as animations in the No Boundaries projection on the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

The workshop, the beautiful textures and fabrics, and the fun moments with sticky glue were captured and edited by Hajnalka Tulogdi and Ingrid Rowel. Enjoy seeing some of the playful magic from the workshop and come and join the fun using recycled and salvaged materials… next time!

Mixed Media Artworks, created by the participants of the No Boundaries Tactile Artwork Mini-Project.

Last week about thirty people participated in workshops at St Mary’s Community Centre to create tactile artwork for inclusion in the No Boundaries project.

The workshop, led by artist David Capra, provided an opportunity to use mixed media to create images and scenes of the Nepean River, and creative scenes from the imagination of participants.

The materials included textiles, beads, textured materials, found objects, and plastics. All are 100% recycled, sourced from council cleanups, garage sales and Reverse Garbage.

Enjoy the photos of the workshops (Photos by Bronwyn Holmes) and look out for some of these images in the No Boundaries show and pop ups!

Hands on! Penrith… An invitation to “people who are good at making things” with fabric, recycled materials and stuff!

UPDATE: Registrations for this workshop have now closed.

It’s now the last four weeks counting down to the exciting presentation of the No Boundaries project in Penrith, and we have decided to run a final hands on workshop / working bee / making project to “make, compile and complete” special tactile textile art pieces that are designed for people with sight impairment to enjoy.

We are inviting people from Penrith, Western Sydney and region to participate in this free workshop to help make the work, learn about tactile art, and make large collaboratively created tactile art pieces for public exhibition at No Boundaries and beyond.

The workshop will be initiated by Cindi Drennan (Creative director of the No Boundaries project) who has an unusual set of skills combining projection art, lighting design, and textile art. Penrith artist Susan Oxenham will be involved to provide guidance and inspiration to those of us involved in making the work. The workshop builds on a previous workshop led by artist David Capra.

Tactile Art made from recycled materials... looks AND feels good. The workshop is ideal for people who LOVE textiles, working with your hands, craftwork, sewing, fabric arts, quilting, hands on glueing and painting, messy stuff, working with sewing machines… and who would be interested in participating in a working bee on a large collaborative project using a variety of media.

The project will interweave lights, recycled materials, textiles and other “stuff” together into artworks designed to be enjoyed and interpreted by people with low vision. If you are interested in seeing some other artwork made along similar principles… check the links at the bottom of this post.

For these artwork pieces, the use of materials that are able to be felt, and to be able to tell a story through touch as well as through the image represented, is very important.

For this reason, the workshop is also a great opportunity for people who are interested in supporting friends, family and community members who may have a vision impairment, to share their knowledge and to be part of the project team.

The artworks will be presented at the No Boundaries event on the 21st and 22nd September 2012, and then will be exhibited in other communities with the support of project partner Vision Australia.

The hands on workshop will be held in Penrith on the 28th – 30th of August, with a follow up session on the 1st and 2nd September. You don’t have to be able to attend every session but naturally it will be “heaps fun” so the more days the merrier. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND UNABLE TO ATTEND THESE DATES we would like you to let us know, as there is the possibility of extending or re-arranging dates depending on numbers.

Storytelling through touch… a tactile and sensory project

The No Boundaries project team are working with individuals and groups in the Penrith area to create some tactile and textural story panels, that represent some of the themes and stories of the project.

The completed panels will be presented at the No Boundaries site in a series of installations around the columns of the colonnade.

The installations are being created in workshops led by artist David Capra.

David is visiting some groups and families to offer the workshops in their own space, and there are a series of three sessions being held in mid August that are open to anyone from the Penrith region.

In the workshop you’ll be using fabrics and textural materials to represent sensations, images, and scenes, knowing that what you create will be experienced through touch. Some glue and paint and sewing techniques will be used, with support from assistants where needed.

The project is being supported by Vision Australia who will be assisting with braille and text interpretive signs and input into the artwork.

The dates of the public workshop are the 14th, 15th and 17th of August at St Mary’s community centre. If you are interested in participating in this inclusive, mixed abilities workshop please contact us.

The maximum number of people is 20, and people with an interest in sensorial art, and art for sight impaired are encouraged to join us.

Light Rhythm Plays!

Interactive... media art generated by drummingLight Rhythm Plays is an add-on to the current projects occurring in Penrith leading up to a large public son et lumier event, focused on supporting and expanding disability arts opportunities in the Penrith LGA. Light Rhythm Plays is supported by the NSW Government through Arts NSW and Ageing, Disability and Home Care.

The project is a partnership bringing together the experienced music therapy organisation Nordoff Robbins to work closely with the interactivity team at Illuminart, to extend the range of instruments that can be played in a public context, to include light drums, midi drums, and other types of instrument for group music/image playing.

Illuminart have been developing audiovisual instruments and sculptures for large scale events (such as Fractured Heart in VIVID festival in Sydney) but with Nordoff Robbins will develop and install a suite of small scale instruments for playing and refining in groups, building on the highly successful and enjoyable work the therapists already carry out, to create new forms of responsive music and image. Over 3 months the group will test out these instruments and the final stage will be both a public performance, and an installation that the public / audience of all ages will be invited to try out and experience.

The context of the final public performance and playing, will be to trigger melodies and accompanying animations in a sound and light environment specially constructed for the presentation of No Boundaries at the Dame Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Daniel Kojta: Exploring the Kingswood Area.. A childhood history

Park Avenue Flats Kingswood Built 1977

Many residents of Penrith will have memories of the flats in Kingswood. These units served as playgrounds for many children growing up in the 1970’s. They have a unique history for many who saw them rise, as developers moved in and purchased many of the original homes built in many cases by Europeans. This national trend was the beginning of the end for the half acre property. Most homes of the time where built on half and quarter acre blocks with vegetable gardens and sheds producing much of the food that was an example of the self sufficiency of the 1950’s post war families. I remember one home renowned for a bunker at the end of the yard. As a child growing up in the seventies I witnessed this social change exploring the demolished sites, finding objects that remained as icons of a cultural shift as we began to move into a life inside the home. Domestic architecture and ‘The suburban dream’ were shifting.
